UP TRAFFIC.
Enclosure 2 in No. 3.
Mr. WARING, Chief Resident Engineer, Nanu-Oya Extension.
I HAVE been over the whole of the trace to Haputale. I have staked out 18 miles, i.e.,
all but the first 6 miles.
At 114 miles Nanu-Oya no steeper gradient than 1 in 52.
From Potupola the line falls, principally, I in 44 to Haputale.
Properly described as a specially difficult line to work, but not so difficult as the Nanu-Oya line.
The rain-fall is less, and there should be less fear of land-slips. country is better than on the Nanu-Oya portion.
The nature of the
Wear and tear about the same. For working, I do not think it would be so expensive
as on the Nanu-Oya, because there would be less fear of slips.
Paragraph 47 of my report,
There should be a turntable at Haputale.
The Haputale section would be easier to work than the Nanu-Oya, because half the traffic either way would be down hill.
Patupola Station--Only required as a place for a tank and for siding for the working
of the fine. No turntable is required.
My estimate on making the line on the departmental system is Rs. 5,911,458.

I had been over the trace when I made the estimates above.
I do not think it would be remunerative to have a narrow gauge railway. Its profita would not be commensurate with the working expenses.
