Government House, Hong Kong, October 8, 1874. WITH reference to my despatch of the 21st of November, 1873, No. 265, and to your Lordship's reply thereto of the 20th of January, 1874, No. 15, I have now the honour to transmit, for your Lordship's consideration, the draft of an Ordi- nance to provide a general Register of Marriages celebrated in the Colony.

It has been very carefully prepared by the Attorney-General, after previous consultation with the parties acquainted with the practical working of the present law.

An Ordinance enacted by the Governor of Hong Kong, with the advice of the Legislative Title. Council thereof, to provide a General Register of Marriages celebrated in Hong Kong.

"

1874. WHEREAS it is expedient that marriages celebrated in the Colony of Hong Preamble. Kong should be systematically recorded in one general register: Be it enacted by the Governor of Hong Kong, with the advice of the Legislative Council thereof, as follows:

I. This Ordinance may be cited for all purposes as "The Marriage Ordinance, short title, 1874."

II. Every minister of religion or other person who has in his custody any Existing registers or, register or other official record of marriages heretofore celebrated in this Colony op here to be shall, within three months after this Ordinance takes effect, deliver to the Registrar-benar-General, General the said register or official record, or a copy thereof.

do certify that the above written pages are a true copy of the register (or official record) of marriages heretofore celebrated in
