Downing Street, March 31, 1876. I HAVE the honour to inform you that Her Majesty has given directions for the appointment of His Highness the Maharajah of Johore to be a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George.
I have had much pleasure in stating to His Highness that the Queen has conferred this honour upon him, and of assuring him how highly Her Majesty's Government appreciate the good offices which he has rendered and the friendly feelings he has on many occasions shown in his relations with the Government of the Straits Settlements.
I request that you will make this known in the Colony in some formal manner.

Downing Street, March 31, 1876. I HAVE to acknowledge the receipt of your confidential despatch of the 24th Feb- ruary last, with a correspondence with Brigadier-General Ross with reference to a report which had reached you that a certain Malay who had been captured had been hung.
2. I have received this intelligence with deep regret, and I forbear for the present all comment as I have already desired you by a telegram to furnish me with full details connected with this unfortunate occurrence.
3. From the inclosure to your despatch it is not clear whether more than one prisoner was put to death or whether the man in question, Panjang Meroo, was one of the three men whose names had been supplied to Brigadier-General Ross as stated in the third paragraph of his report to you.
