Acknowledging the Memorandum enclosed in his letter, and stating that be has addressed. the Governor on the subject, in which he inculcated additional caution as to the alti- tude to be assumed by the British Residents, and that bis Lordship will continue carefully to watch their proceedings
Forwarding copy of the letter and Memorandum received through Lord Stanley of Alderley, respecting the affairs of the Malay States. Expressing clearly his Lordship's opinion that the British Residents should in all ordi- nary cases contine their action to advice tendered by them to the native rulers, under whose direction the Government of the country should be carried on
