Inclosure 8 in No. 86.

Salamis," off the Jugra River, February 11, 1874. REFERRING to my order of the 6th instant, I have now to direct that the blockade of the Jugra River, thereby established, be henceforth discontinued.

You are to receive on board Her Majesty's ship under your command Major McNair and Mr. Davidson, the two Commissioners appointed by his Excellency the Governor of the Straits Settlements for the purpose of assisting Tunku Dia Udin, Viceroy of Salangore, and the Commissioners (Datu Aros, Punghala Dugang, Lu Kang) appointed by the Sultan of Salangore, in investigating certain recent cases of piracy, and adopting such measures as may be necessary for punishing such parties as may be found guilty. His Highness the Tunku Dia Udin is also to be received on board the "Thalia" and treated with every consideration.

The "Rinaldo and "Avon are to remain under your orders, as well as the "Midge," now at Langat, the residence of the Sultan of Salangor. A copy of the orders which I have given to Commander Grant is inclosed. Sir Andrew Clarke intends to place the Colonial steam-launch "Mata Mata" also at your disposal. The prisoners now on board the "Rinaldo" are to be handed over to the Tunku Dia Udin for trial when required.

You will afford the Viceroy and the Commissioners all the countenance and support in your power, and in case the charges of piracy and murder brought against the prisoners be proved against any of them, you will give all necessary assistance in the execution of punishment on them, by the presence of an armed force on the occasion. Should it be decided to disarm or destroy the stockades in the mouth of the Jugra River, you are to afford all material assistance that may be requisite.

The Tunku Dia Udin, in concert with the Commissioners, may possibly decide on the necessity for also destroying the stockades at the mouth of the Tombulu River (not marked in the chart), about seven miles south of the Langat or Jugra River, and also those at the entrance of the Lukut River, about twelve miles north of Cape Rachado. You will afford the aid of an armed force, if necessary; and it is desirable that it should be a strong force, so as to overawe all possible resistance.

"Thalia," of Langkat River, February 12, 1874. IN obedience to your Memorandum of the 6th instant I left the anchorage off One Fathom Bank, in company with the "Rinaldo" and "Avon" at 7:30 P.M. of that day, anchoring off the Langkat River at 180 A.M. the 'boats, manned and armed, of this ship, with those of the "Rinaldo” and “Aven,' At day-light on the following morning under my personal command, accompanied by Commander Parsons, proceeded to search the river.

Immediately inside the bar two small and indifferently-constructed stockades were found, the one on the left bank being armed with four game, while that on the right with two guns. There were also two protected look-outs, armed with gingala. These defences were all deserted, excepting by five or six men, from whom no information could be obtained. Haring proceeded from three to four miles up the river, and finding nothing, Freturned to the "Thalia," leaving boats with Lieutenant Moysey, of this ship, with 'orders' to establish an effectual watch, which has since been kept up.
