General tranquillity prevails in the island. The Buddhist question, which of late years caused some trouble, has been settled, and works satisfactorily.

By that settlement the priests are elected by their own body. A railroad from Colombo to Kandy, through the coffee district, has been projected by a Company, which has a guarantee of 6 per cent. from the colonial authorities, and measures have been taken for an exploration and survey of the line.

The troops in this island consist of 2,332 rank and file.
