This country continues to pay a charge for Indians, which was incurred many years ago for war services. It is being gradually reduced, and now amounts to only 3,5411. It will soon be altogether extinguished. We contribute, also, to the support of certain bishops and clergy in this province, in pursuance of an old pledge; but this charge, too, is in process of extinction as lives fall in. For the year ending March 1856, the vote was 7,3971.
The total debt of Canada, including the public guarantee lent to railways, and municipal debts, is estimated by a Committee of the House of Assembly at 9,650,5061.; and this debt, it should be observed, has been chiefly incurred for public improvements.
