Associated Press report Madame Chiang Kai Chek as stating at press conference in Taipeh 20th January that

"she would mobilize women to care for wounded soldiers and intended to establish production centre for those unable to fight again".

2. This statement ill accords with unhelpful and unhumanitarian attitude of Nationalist authorities towards disabled and destitute Nationalist soldiers and their families who have found their way to Hong Kong in recent months. Our offers to send these soldiers at our expense to Formasa and Hainan have been blocked by refusal to admit them, although we have managed to get a small number away. About 2,000 still remain here and present an acute and embarrassing problem. are prepared to arrange passages for them to Formosa where Madame Chiang Kai Shek can receive and sare for them. We should be glad if you would obtain from the appropriate Chinese

authorities an undertaking that they would (corrupt group)*

approach you must formally warn them that in the circumstances we

will have no option but to refuse entry permits into Hong Kong for all Chinese from Formosa.
