Political:

Summary of Events in Formosa during the month of October, 1950.

13. There has been further publicity over the Nationalist refugees in Hong Kong. It was reported in the press in early October that Chiang Kai-shek had received an appeal from these refugees written in blood for permission to enter Formosa. The Generalissimo is reported to have instructed the Executive Yuan to take speedy action and at the end of the month the China Mainland Relief Commission sent a representative to Hong Kong to investi- gate the condition of the refugees and the possibility of shipping them to Formosa. The Provincial Government are reported to be agreeable to admitting them individually but not on a mass basis. The press has also taken up the case and has urged their admittance. Conveniently ignoring that the plight of these refugees is due to the original refusal of the Nationalists to receive them, the press deplores the Hong Kong Government's attempts to make them return to the mainland.
