The Chiefs of Staff understand that

one of the main difficulties of increasing the size of the existing police force would be the provision of European officers. The Chiefs of Staff think it probable that, as the numbers required will not be large, suitable ex-Servicemen who could be easily and quickly trained are probably available. They suggest that the Colonial Office might contact the Service Departments to obtain a list of suitable ex-Servicemen.

In view of the urgency of reaching a

decision on the desirability of

accelerating the formation of additional battalions of the Malay Regiment, the War Office have been invited to examine this matter as a matter of urgency, and independently of the more long term examination that is now being done into the provision of colonial forces required for internal security duties.

The Chiefs of Staff think that the Ack-Ack battery of the H. K. D. F. should be adequate to deal with the air threats to the Colony but as this unit will not be ready until late 1950, the War Office are

examining what interim arrangements can be made.

(e) The Chiefs of Staff consider that the

Governor, in consultation with the Naval Commander-in-Chief who will give the utmost assistance in his power, should be
