and one defending the road and railway approach via TAIPO. Retention of control of the FANLING quadrilateral is therefore of major importance.
We
(b) Provided we have use of the road, railway and sea routes available on the TAIPO route the Forces which we can put into the field should not be short of supplies. must therefore keep these routes open, at the same time denying to the enemy the use of the YUEN LONG road. If we try to keep both roads open for our own use there is a danger that too many troops, police, etc., will be dissipated on L. of C. duties.
(c) We require a better system of lateral roads farther
South than the FANL ING quadrilateral.
FEATURES.
24.
25.
The range of hills LONG RIDGE 5427 CHEVIOTS 5227 DOWNS 4727 form a natural defence line with:-
(a) I imited avenues of approach.
(b) Good observation North and South.
#
NORTH
(c) Easy crest clearance for Naval and Artillery supporting
fire.
(d) Fair air dropping zones in rear.
(e) Some lateral communications in rear.
(f) Good concentration areas in rear.
To hold this line will also deny the enemy the vital FANI ING quadrilateral and gives us a good jumping off place for offensive action.
Deductions.
(a) The range of hills LONG RIDGE - CHEVIOTS NORTH DOWNS must be held from the start. No other features confer the same advantages.
(b) Owing to the strength available to hold ground there must be some defence in depth and some supplies must be held well forward to allow for small enemy parties cutting communications in rear of our main forces.
