Into Hong Kong

THE

HE refugees who are reported to be pouring into Hong Kong will intensify a mystery. Even the best informed quarters can only estimate tentatively the colony's population. Ordinarily, the Chinese are in and out of the territory like crush hour tube travellers passing each other on escalators, with the result that last year, for example, Hong Kong recorded almost 2,000,000 immigrants but also just over 2,000,000 emigrants. Just before the present influx of refugees. it was reckoned, allowing for a consider- able margin of error either way, that the territory's resident population amounted to about 1,800,000. A census is planned for next year.
