Your telegram No. 358 [of 20th April] Canton incident.
Two questions have been set down for answer in Parliament on Monday regarding the payment of compensation and the report of the Chinese Government's Committee of Investigation.

The report of the Chinese Governments investigators... has not been communicated to His Majesty's Embassy, nor has any formal reply yet been received. are still proceding. His Majesty's Ambassador has in- formed the Chinese Government that British Claims are expected to approximate £300,000. In doing so Sir. R. Stevenson has suggested that the Chinese Government might care to settle at this figure and close the case.
