anti-British demonstrations in Chungking aren

Consulate-beneral,
25th 20s,
His Excellency
I have the honour to report on anti- British activities in this district in connexion with the so-called Zowloon ineédente.

The first clear indication that there would be any developments here was contained in a local news itea of 16th January to the effect that students of the Chungking University and others were planning to hold a demonstration or parade. On t.e same day it was reported that the Chungking Municipai Council had sent a telegram to the Generalissim regis tering a protest against the actions of the Hongkong Government in Kowlong city, and demanding rendition of Hongkong & Kowloon. (The reply, apparently dated gist January, came from the <inistry of Foreign Affairs and, according to the Chungking "ta Hung iso", merely stated that the issue vas a complicated one and the Special Delegate for Foreign Affaire at Hongkong had heen instructed to negotiate with the Colonial Govern:tant with a view to obtaining a reasonable settlessent).
The demonstration at Chungking 788
originally scheduled for 18th January but, partly due to lack of enthusiasm among the students in general and endeavour by the local authorities to prevent it taking place at all, was postponed from day to day and held eventually on 23rd January. The Bayor, the Chief of
olice, the Defence Commissioner, and the Vice-Director of the residents Chan, king Beadquarters, were all in constant touch with this office from the 18th January onwards and assured me that the fullest possible pro- tection would be given to ull british subjects and institution. The authorities, acting on order from ivanking, were helpful throughout and apparently deter- mined to see that there would be no repetition here of the shameful events at Canton. I confirmed twice with Chungking Headquarters that stringent orders had been issued to all parts of Szechuan (particularly to Chen,tu, Kweichow, and Bisikang to ensure the safety of British life and property.

M. on 23rd Janusry and paraded through the city shouting slogans and pasting stickers on walls and tele- graph poles. On passing ing Shin ilang (at about 1.30 p.m.) a detachment
