Hong Kong telegram to Hong Kong[sic] 1893.

Eviction of squatters from Kowloon walled

Vice Ministry [sic] of Foreign Affairs summoned Counsellor of this Embassy to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the evening of January 6th. He stated that he understood that the squatters were being evicted and that during this process two Chinese had been arrested. He wished to register official protest against this action and to request the intervention by this Embassy with the Hong Kong Government with a view to the prevention of further evictions and the release of the arrested Chinese. He was informed that his protest would be communicated to me but that it was most unlikely that his request for intervention would be granted. Labouchere gained the impression that Doctor Liu Shih Huang was speaking more for forms sake than with any conviction. This is borne out by the fact that such of this mornings newspapers which I have read up to the present merely record the Ministry's protest and show no inclination to indulge in polemics.
