Following is text of statement issued by Director of Government Information on events of January 16th.

2. The Chinese Government deeply regret the unfortunate incidents in Canton. While awaiting fuller details Prime Minister Chang Chun has telegraphically instructed all provincial and municipal authorities to accord adequate protection to British Consulates and to lives and property of British nationals in their respective areas and to mete out punishment to rioters according to the law.
