In the
curb the action of the unruly members among the crowd. mellee, the British Consulate General was set on fire which later spread to adjacent buildings.. Fire engines were immediately rushed to the scene. However high wind fanned the fire and made the efforts of putting out the fire most difficult. The fire was finally brought under control after 5 p.m.
On hand at the scene to direct the fire brigade were Mayor Auyang Chu, General Li Chu, Chief of Staff of the President's Canton Headquarters and Mr. Lin Yi-Chung. Although their sentiments are high over the Kowloon City issue, the populace in general expressed regret regarding this afternoon's incident. Eye-witnesses were of the opinion that the riot was started by subversive elements. They asserted that these elements secing the opportune moment afforded, by the struggle between the police and the crowd, committed the arson.
