Meanwhile, apart from the steps taken in Shanghai to keep the flag flying, the best news that has come to hand is the mention by the Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs that it is the Government's intention to maintain the British position in Hong Kong. The measures giving effect to this intention have not yet been published, but it is the only policy to follow if we wish to maintain our position in the Far East. The knowledge that there is a stable focus off the China coast from which trading interests, British, Chinese, or any nationality can operate in peace and security, is an inestimable blessing to this war-torn country and one which it is impossible to over estimate.
