I joined the Gaol Department on the 1st March 1886.
And then did you remain in the gaol until you joined
the Sanitary Department ?

I remained under General Gordon till February 1887,
when I resigned from the Gaol Department and went to
the Imperial Chinese Customs at Canton.
Then you left the Customs at Canton and came hack to *****

I was five years, some odd days, in the Customs, and I
resigned from the Customs Service,

And then you came down and joined the Sanitary

I established myself as a tea merchant and commision
agent in Hankow after I left the Customs. I was
unfortunate enough to lone about $40,000 in Rankow by
a fire. I came down to Hongkong and established
business again in Canton. I had the misfortune to lose
and I closed the pince and joined the Gaol Department
