to deteriorate and the Government to disintegrate, or if its authority became seriously weakened, the Hong Kong Government could then consider, with due regard to possible repercussions on its relations with the neighbouring provinces of Kwangtung and Kwangsi, whether the time might not be opportune to take more drastic action against the Kuomintang. While, however, the latter enjoys its present backing, any such action would, in our opinion, involve the risk of adverse repercussions for the Colony, and perhaps also invite embarrassing demands elsewhere.
