(iv) A local newspaper printed a very outspoken
political criticism of Chiang Kai-shek and the
Kuomintang. One paragraph in this article contained
libellous statements regarding Chiang Kai-shek himself.
The editor and managing director of the paper were
informed that, while this Government had no objection
to outspoken political criticism, they could not permit
defamatory statements regarding individuals to pass
unchallenged, particularly when the individual concerned
was the head of a friendly Government. A retraction of
the offending passage was made in the next issue of the
paper.
