With regard to limewashing, Mr Osborne, I understand

that your opinion is that limewashing is absolutely

ineffectumi as a germicide ↑

A.

Quite, because I think it is not proper limewash.

But dealing with such limewash as the Colony produces,

and as is used here ↑

Your suggestion or counter proposal is that the houses

should be cleansed once a month. Dont you think that

would press rather hardly on a large number of Chinese,

to have their rooms turned out once a month, to have

everything put out of the room on to the street, and

the room swept and garnished ↑

It is only a matter of half an hour's preparation or

an hour's.

This is a matter we have devoted a great deal of 18005~

attention to, and on which we have examined many

witnesses, and I think the consecus of opinion is that the limewashing is not of itself a preventative and cure for sickness, but it has this advantage that twice a year the house has to be cleansed out, and that that alone is the only justification for the lime- washing. That is done twice a year, and your proposal

is that it should be done twelve times a year.

My observation is that the limewashing is not done twice

a year properly. It is simply splashed on to the

interiors of the rooms, and the corners and dirty

places are not limewashed at all.

Can you give us the names of Districts in which that18006

has occurred ?

I can only mentios from what I see, principally in

Kowloon and Yawati, That is to say, the work is not

done thoroughly.
