I have repeatedly tried to explain to the Chinese

cattle dealers that it is no use to bring lean cattle

to be slaughtered, and that to bring them here is to

lose money. If they kept them at home and fed them, and

brought them back, they would then be worth money.

There is a patch of ground close to the Slaughter

House which Inspector Watson and I dug over and plașted

with guinea grass, and Inspector Watson boʻght the

cattle and fad them on that guinea grass, which was

planted there, and then they were brought back into

the Depot and sold.

Dont you think it would be very much better that such a

system should not be allowed to continue ↑ You understand

that a Chinaman bringing dom lean cattle would be only

too glad to get $10, rather than have a beast left on

his hands. At the same time, it might be a matter that

!)

might be very much abused. There might be some hanky

panky, that some animal might not be passed, and they

might bring it back and make $20 or $30 on it.

it would.

Dont you think it would be better to discontinue the (7045"

system?

The system has bean discontinued.

Since when ?

17046

I think last year there were two, and I think this year

there were two. The animals were fed round there, and

they were brought in regularly, and weighed. It was more

or less an experiment, and the dealers themselves took

an interest in the actual weight these cattle were

gaining.
