without effect, and that it was waste of money, and

that it was annoying people. He got rather a short

answer back, and I dont think he came to you on the

subject. You would not recommend such a process again ?

We get the Chinese to do the work themselves, and wo

supply then with hot water and Jeyes Fluid, and after

they are cleansed by the Chinese, the idea is to

sprinkle the floor and crevices. It is one table spoon

full to a gallon of crude phenyl. It is a very good

pulicide, kills fleas. It is a corrosive too, and very

oily, and it is preferable to be laid down by the

Sanitary Staff than by the tenants. They have to lay

all their things out, and you dont do it until after

the floor id dried.

J

But it seems to me that the general complaint about 6476

cleansing in the past is the way it has been done, and

the harsh treatment of the Chinese, Cant, as this is

being done again, a little more supervision be given

over the Inspectors by the M. O, H. even if he neglected

the other work, to curb the Inspectors ?

If I was M. 0. H. I should go round more.

16477

Is there any reason why he should not go round more ?

Except that he is doing the work of two officers.

That brings another point to my mind, that we should 16478

never have less than three Madical Officers of Health

in the Colony at one time.

A.

There are two.

29

And one in Victoria cannot do all the work ?

A.

No.

Mr Shelton Hooper: What, wouldnt there be sufficient work for a M. 0. H.16480
