It is about five years ago, I think, since Carbolosene was used, and it was used principally as a cleansing preparation. Of course, it contains soft soap. or some equivalent. I cannot remember any details as to why it
was taken into use, or why it was abandoned.
I have all the papers here. The records apparently 15.746 shew that Mr Reidie, Inspector, suggested to you personally to use Carbolosene as a substitute for Jeyes
Fluid. Do you remember that ?

Yes. I will see where it begins. The papers are somewhat incomplete. We have had evidence already given to us by previous witnesses that that is so, and so far
as these papers bear out that statement, it appears to be correct. Carbolosene for about a year was used in very large quantities, and in the spring of 1902 the question was raised in connection with the use of disinfectants and apparently that came about by the fact that Carbologene was a great deal more expensive, than Jeyes Fluid, Carboloaene being in the meantime used in
very large quantities in place of Jeyes Fluid. Carbolos- ene cost $2 per gallon, as against $1.66 per gallon for Jeyes Fluid, and that meant a great difference in the expendituša of the Department, and that question was
