Or how many houses can he do in a day, if you think (5459
three is not the correct number ?
It is very difficult to answer a question like that.
It depends so much upon the nature of the assistance he
has, and depends upon the size of the houses, the
number of storeys, and the extent of the houses,
there are many factors.
Take the average of Chinese houses, forty to fifty is460
fest by fifteen feet, and three storeys ?
I should be very sorry to say that a man could
supervise the disinfection of three, and that he could
not possibly dupervise the disinfection of four.
But do you think four an outside limit ?

A.
It is a matter of personal equation. Some men can do
more; other men less. The question comes whether they
Į
are three houses side by side, or houses at each end of
his District. It is a question that is impossible to
answer.
But knowing the difficulties, what do you think is a
reasonable proportion, if we had a thousand cases a
year?
15462
If you go by the scheme which I drew up for plague
work, I think you will find that as soon as there were
20 cases or more of plague a day, the plague staff was
ingreased, and I would base that on the assumption of
two houses a man, - ten Districts, 20 cases, « but of
course those 20 oases may be all in one District, or they may be soattered about, and when I was doing
plague work before, used to lend one man from one
District which was light to another District which was
heavy.
