C.O. 537.
"year, about the 10th moon (Chinese) Inspector Gidley
"served a notios on the occupier of two houses, Nos 119
*ahd 121 Des Voeux Road West, that he was to inspect
"the concrete there. The occupiers, whose name I now
*forget, but whom I can identify, went for me to go to
"their shops. When I callad, they asked me if I could
"arrange with the Inspector not to disturb the concrete
*for some money consideration. I enquired how much they
"would like me to offer to the Inspector, and they said
"they were prepared to pay something like $30 for each
"house. I dont remember the exact sug they offered, but
"I think they said that. I saw the Inspector in his
"house, and told him what the occupiers wished him to
"do. The Inspector appointed a time to inspect the
"concrete, and told me to be there at the same time, to
"wait for him, and take a coolie with me to open up the
"floor for inspection. The Inspector inspected the
"concrete, and said that it ms alright. The occupiers
*then paid the money as promised, and I paid $30 for
"each house to the Inspector, the balance I kept for
"myself.
Witness interpolates:- I remember now of this money payment. There is $20
The Chairman}~
paid for each house - - Oh no,
that is not it. One
house paid $20, and the other paid $30, and $50
altogether was given. Then wheh it was given to me,
I
went up and found the Inspector, and I said "Here is
$50" and placed it there.
I think gentlemen, it is better if you dont ask any
questions until he has finished his atatement, and then
we will ask him some questions on the statement.
fitness pontinuing: He took away $40, and said "that is yours" ($10).
The Inspector had said $20 a house. If you read down, you
will see about it,
(Statement continued).
