The Chairman:= 3911

A:-

Dr Pearce, sworn and cautioned:-

Part of our Commission deals with investigation as to 3411

alleged charges of bribery and corruption, and I am

sorry to say that we have already come across evidence

which makes us think that in some oases at all events

these charges are founded, and of course this is a

matter that must be gone into. We have already had Dr

Macfarlane and Inspector MacKenzie, but I want you to

tell us what took place with regard to Lo Man Kai ?

It was a matter of gossip only, between Dr Macfarlane

me deng

མ : and myself. It was going up to the Peak after dinner

that we were discussing various possibilities, and

amongst other things, Dr Macfarlane said to me that it

was rumoured that Lo Man Kai was Man Hing. A little

later on I saw Kr Woodcook collecting a lot of papers,

vouchers and other things to send to the commission, and

one afternoon I was going with Mr Woodoook towards the

Jail, when he asked me had I heard any rumours in my

connection with these vouchers. I told him I had heard

the rumour that Lo Man Kai was Man Hing.
