I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No.Secret Hong Kong, dated 14th April 1897, in which you call attention to the

remarks of the Colonial Defence Committee on the letter, 21st January 1897, from the Foreign Office to the Colonial Office, on the subject of the proposed extension of the bound-

aries of Hong Kong.

In reply I am to inform you that Lord Lansdowne is of opinion that it would be inexpedient to proceed further with

the consideration of this subject at the present time.
