August 27. 1896.

Sir,

I laid before the Marquis of Salisbury your letter

of the 20th instant, marked Secret, on the subject

of the proposed extension of the boundaries of the

Colony of Hongkong.

It was intimated in my letter of the 9th of

December last that this matter could not be brought

before the Chinese Government until certain other

questions had been satisfactorily disposed of

His Lordship now directs me to state that

the negotiations respecting the Frontier between Burma

and China, and the opening of the West River to trade, are

still pending, and that he is unable as yet to say

how soon it will be possible to proceed with the

application to the Chinese Government which is desired

by Mr Secretary Chamberlain.

I am,

Sir,

nier Secretary of State

Colonial Office.

your most obedient,

humble Servant.
