The extension of our frontier proposed in the Report
of the Joint laval and Military Committee, referred to above, would entirely remove this evil, and would .not of itself neces- sarily demand any addition to the existing garrison or defence
works of Hong Kong.
Under these circumstances Lord Lansdowne considers hat a prompt settlement of this question in our favour would creatly conduce to the security of our important coaling station at long long, and he desires me to inquire whether any result has accrued from the action promised in the Foreign Office letter dated 9th December 1895, that formed the enclosure to your sepret letter to the War Office of the 11th December
1895.
