You should also see that the Chiefs of Staff, when considering the command of Services in Hong Kong after the resumption of Civil Government, decided to invite General Ismay to consult Sir George Gater with a view to discovering the 0.0. attitude to the suggestion put forward by Lad Alanbrooke that Admiral Harcourt should continue to administer Hong Kong after the 1st of April
as Governor, in view of the desirability of having a member of the Armed Forces in charge of the administration whilst the 93rd Chinese Army pass through Hong Kong.
On other papers it has been agreed that the
1st of April and we are arranging for the Governor's return on that basis. I presume that we shall be in a position to deal finally with the enquiry which is coming from General Ismay very shortly. (I have suggested to Mr. Creech Jones' private secretary that an appointment should be made for Sir Mark Young next Friday afternoon, which is the next occasion on which he will be in Town.)
