FIGHTER FORCES.

Under oxisting plan for the deployment of British air forces in the Far East, one single-engid fighter squadron equipped with Spitfire XTVs is located in Hong Kong. The Spitfire XIV is a first line fighter ared with 2011, camon and two .5 machine-guns, it can also carry bombs, Its performance and, in particular, its initial rate of club nko it ominently suitable for defence against the type of enemy air attack which is visualized. It is therefore considered that this squadron, supplemented by laval fighters, is sufficient to ensure ronnonable security against air attack by day. It is considered that provided the day fighter defence system is maintained at a high dogroc of efficiency, cheny losses in daylight attacks would probably force hin to resort to spasmodic night attacks on a small sealo. Attached as Annexure "A" to this paper is an appreciation of the radar problen, This appreciation covers the disposition of radar installations as have arrived, or have boun allocated, to the Colony. It is considered that the deployment suggested would afford roasamble cover.

In order to obtain adequate fighter control, it is considered
that the minimum organization should be:-

A central fightor operaions and filter room and two G. C. I. stations.
The fighter operations roon should be the central and co- ordinating authority for all R.A.F. and laval fighters operating from shore bases in the Colony.
Each G.C.I. station should control interceptions within its specified area, such interceptions should be co-ordinated through the fighter operations roaa.
Local Chinese citizens will be required to supplement the manning of the fighter operations room, filter roon and G. C. I. stations. These civilians should be trained by the R.F.
(a) Navy and Army Haison officers will be required to work in the
fightor operations roon and maintain touch with lavy and Army Headquarters,
ANTI-AIRCRAFT DEFENCE.

It is suggested that the bulk of tho anti-aircraft defences should be mobile. A very close liaison betweon the fighter operations root and the control of anti-aircraft fire is an essential requiremont.
