We have received from the Air Ministry a copy of a paper for submission to the Chiefs of Staff on Ping Shan Airfield, which was prepared as a result of the Conclusion of the Chiefs of Staff at their 27th Meeting on the 18th of February, which the Treasury and the Ministry of Civil Aviation were invited to take such action as they considered necessary on the Commander-in-Chief, Hong Kong's signal No. 882 of the 15th of February.

In this paper it is stated that there is no longer a current military requirement for a V.HI.B. airfield in Hong Kong and that Kai Tak airfield, if suitably developed, will meet military requirements for the present. The implication of

this is, of course, that the only requirement for a new airfield in Hong Kong is a civil one, and it is therefore a matter of interest to your Department and ours.

We have not yet received a copy of the Report of the Joint Mission which recently visited Hong Kong to report upon the suitability of the Ping Shan site, and we shall be glad to receive one so that we may study the facts contained therein, with particular reference to the proposal that a civil airfield should be established at Deep Bay. We shall also be glad to receive an early indication of your views on the desirability of
