Dear Miss Holdgate,
(st)
19th July 1946.
With reference to telegram No. 457 dated 28th June from Hong Kong to the Colonial Office (of which a copy was sent to you), regarding the use of Kai-Tak airfield by Skymasters, I think you ought to know the views of our Operational people on this question.
They consider that although four-engined aircraft have on occasion landed there,Kai-Tak aerodrome is not suitable for Skymasters on a regular service. There are two hard surface runwaya:
(1) 13/31 runway 1492 yards
(11) 25/07 runway 1473 yards.
There is only one good approach, coming in over water from the south-east but the prevailing wind is also from the south-east. Near the 13 and of the 13/31 runway the ground rises to 1,800 ft. The 07/25 runway is worse, as the approach at the 07 end is over a built-up area, and a normal approach on the 25 end is impossible owing to high groundup to 2,100 ft.
The following performance figures for the Skymaster are on resord here:- At an all-up weight of 68,000 lbs. the take-off run to clear 50 ft. is 1,630 yds normal and 1.200 yds. classic. gross weight has gone up to 71,300 lbs.
