purchased by him, 1887, and he has converted what was at first a losing cuterprise into a paying concern ; in 1904 visited Europe to study the shoe manufacturing industry and

pert whom he engaged; was long Vice-Chairman of Tokyo Chamber of

Commerce; one of the founders of

the Tokyo Higher Commercial School, and of the Tokyo Asylum for Aged and Foundlings; in re- cognition of his services the Go-

vernment awarded him a medal.
