joined "China Mail" as sub-editor
and reporter; became editor later, and proprietor in 1872; during 1887 and 1882 took active part in fighting the vicious policy of the then Governor, Sir John Pope Hennessy; has consistently upheld British in- terests and maintained an impartial attitude towards other nationals;
