The aggregate trade of the Colony, as expressed in terms of local values of imports und exports of merchandise, further improved during the calendar year 1988, but a comparative decline was noticed in the final quarter of 1988 which can be attributed to the extension of Japanese military operations to South China, and, in particular, to the Japanese necupation of Canton which port is the Colony's principal commercial neighbour. As a result of the Japanese occupation of Canton, the nortual trade routes between Hong Kong and the South China regions served by Canton, were entirely disrupted. In each of the first three quarters of the year 1988 the total trade with South China averaged $70.9 millions in At the each quarter, whereas in the final quarter of the year the total trade fell to $32.6 millions. close of the year there were no signs of any early resumption of trade with Canton.
During the year 1938 imports from Japan totalled $18.8 millions as compared with $58.0 millions in 1937, representing a decrease of 67.6%.

In terms of local currency imports of merchandise in 1938 increased by 0.2% us compared with 1937, and by 36.6% as compared with 1936; whilst exports increased by 9.5% as compared with 1937, und by 45.9% as compared with 1936.
In terms of sterling value imports of merchandise increased by 0.3% in 1938 as compared with 1937, and by 34.0% as compared with 1936; whilst exports increased by 10.1% in 1939 as compared with 1937, and by 43.4% us compared with 1936.
Total movements of treasure amounted to $197.7 millions in 1938 as compared with $781.6 millions ак compared with $396.4 in 1937 and $216.5 millions in 1936: imports accounting for $9.6 millions millions in 1987 and $72.7 millions in 1986, and exports $188.1 millions in 1937 and $143.8 millions in 1936.
