PIECE GOODS AND TEXTILES,

A general concensus of the opinions of importers and exporters would tend to show that 1932 was the worst year since the chaotic Strike year of 1925.

Statistics show that total imports in 1952 amounted to $107.3 millions as compared with $131.7 millions in 1931; while exports totalled $66.9 millions as compared with $75.8

millions.

A detailed comparison of the figures for 1932 and 1925 is not possible: in 1925, statistics were kept for only six months; and the Piece Goods trade is essentially a seasonal one.

The more important groups are summarized below, showing the total imports in quan- tities and values for the years 1931 and 1932:

The British share of the total trade amounted to 38 6% in 1932 as compared with 32.6% in 1931, while the Japanese share declined from 19.1% in 1981 to 7.0% in 1932
