B5 “Penal Imprisonment" is meant imprisonment inflicted as a substantive punishment in pursuance of a sentence of a Court

of Justice, as distinguished from imprisonment for safe custody, &c.

THESE QUESTIONS ARE TO BE FILLED UP IN RESPECT OF EACH PRISON

IN THE COLONY.

Questions.

I. If the Prison is on a separate system, is the separation complete ? And, if not, what is the separa- tion enforced by day and night respectively?

11.—If not on the separate system, what provision is there for the supervision of the prisoners while in association ?

111.—How many cells are there; and how many associated wards ?

IV. Taking the average number of prisoners in Gaol, how many rubic feet of spare are there for encli prisoner during the hours of sleep ?

V.-How are the prisoners elussifial ?

The Victoria Gaol is nearly on the separate system. The Branch Prison at Lai Chi Kok is not on the separate system. Prisoners work and sleep in asso-

eintion.

Victoria Gaol :—All well doors are provided with inspection holes through which the prisoners can be seen by the officers patrolling the wards. While at labour or exercise the prisoners are at all times under the immediate supervision of Principal Warders, Warders, and Assistant Warlers. At Lai Chi Kok Branch Prison, officers patrol behind grilles at night,

Victorin Gaol:- 633 cells on the separate system, 9 association cells, I condemned cell and 1 polded cell. Lai Chi Kok:- & Halls-each Hall can accom- molate 60 prisoners.

Lai Chi Kok:-There are 602 cubic feet to each prisouor and ench one bas 54 8q. feet of window cap- able of being opened.

In cln-sification their sentences and nationality are taken into emailerntion; they are classified as follows, viz.:-

Females.

Europeans, Indians, and Chinese.

Convicted adult prisoners.

Debtors.

Misdemeanants.

On rewand and awaiting trial. Juvenile offenders.

All the prisoners of the above classes are separated

at night, and in the yards, so far as possible.
