Answers.
There is no tread-mill labour, but shot-drill, crank- labour, stone-carrying and oakum-picking are in force.

The hours of labour for all prisoners in this Colony throughout the year are from 7 A.M. to 4 г.., ong hour being allowed for dinner. When penal labour is resorted to, men on the crank have to complete revo- lutions not exceeding 12,500 per day; European pri- soners at shot-drill do 4 hours, and Chinese prisoners 4 hours per day, in spells of half an hour at a time, with stone-carrying or oakum-picking during the intervals.
Tailoring, shoo-making, carpontering, grass and coir mat making, cane-chair making, ship swab and fonder making, printing, book-binding, not making, tinsmith- ing, white-washing, cleaning, and incidental repairs to the Gaol buildings.
Prisoners sontoncol to 6 months' imprisonmont with hard labour and undor, but over 14 days are employed on public works.

All cash earnings are paid into the Tronsury honded as Prison labour. Amount during the year $4,622.84 of which $314.88 was for 1891, and $1,807.96 for 1892,
The total expenditure of the Gaol in 1892 was $56,305.95, of which tho sum of $911,49 was ro-fundod for the subsistenco of Naval, Military Court Martinl and Consulata prisonors, Debtors, &c., as follows:-

It has been customary in past years to show undor this hond the total cash carnings for Prison industrial labour during the year. This in 1892 amounted to $8,122.54 being the proceeds of onkum-picking, coir mat making, fender and swab making, net making and n small account for carpontering, tailoring, book-bind- ing, tinsmithing, and shoc-making. This does not include the valuo of labour for clothing and matting made in Gaol for Prison us0.
The average timo during which the prisonors sleep is about 11 hours in 24.

The dormitorica are not lighted; but Gas is kept burning in all passages and corridors, and the Turnkeys on duty are provided with bulls-eyes lanterns to throw light into the dormitories when required.
Turnkeys are on duty in the Grol throughout the night, and patrol the corridors and passages constantly.
