The number of Prisoners reported for Prison Offences during the year 1897 was 11,174, ont of this number 951 were cantioned and admonished, and 10,220 were panishad in the manner detailed below, viz.:—–

4 with Solitary Confinement on Brend and Water

for one day.

The Colonial Chaplain is ez-officio Chaplain of the Gaol.

Roligious servicos are regularly hold for the benefit of Episcopalian prisoners, and occasionally for Prosby- torian, and othor Dissonting prisoners.

The Prison is also visitol by Roman Catholic Priests, who hold a sorvico for both European and Chinoso prisoners of that persuasion.

A Roligious servico is also hold regularly evory Sunday morning for the bonolit of Chinose prisoners by native clergymon bolonging to St. Stephen's Church. Attendanco Voluntary.

They are allowed free access to the Prison at such hours ns do not intorfore with the discipling of tho Prison. Intimation is immodiately sont to any Minister or Pelust, if at any timo a prisonór oxprossos a osiro Lu soo him.

Remissions of sontonces have boon granted under a system which was takon into consideration in May, 1877, viz., nil prisoners sontenced to a torm of jucar coration of 12 months and over havo boon granted i remission of one-third of their sontondo, provided that their conduct during their stay in Guól was good : others have had portions of their sentences remitted ou modical grounds, &c.
