By "Penal Imprisonment" is meant. Imprisonment inflicted as a substantive Punishment in pursuance of a sentence of a Court of

Justice, as distinguished from Imprisonment for Safe Custody, &c,

THESE QUESTIONS ARE TO BE FILLED UP IN RESPECT OF EACH PRISON IN THE COLONY.

I. If the Prison is on the soparate system, is this separation comploto? And if not, what is tho separa- tion onforced by day and night rospectively?

11. If not on the separato system, what provision in there for the supervision of the prisoners 'while in association ?

III. How many cells are there; and how many nasoclnted wards ?

IV. Taking the averago number of prisoners in Gnol, how many cutlu feet of spren are there for enrlı prisoner during the hours of sleep?

Answers.

The Prison is not on the soparato system. Forty- six cells are on the sepurato system and the majority of the European prisoners and a small number of Chinese prisoners sleep in separate colls, the remainder uro in association day and night.

All the cells of the prison havo iron gatos, throngh which the prisonors can ho soon at night. While at labour or at oxorvise, the prisonors are constantly under the supervision of the Prison OMeers,

The daily average number of prisoners confined in the Gaol during the year 1887 was 384. The eubia measurement of all the cells combinod has been in- correctly stated in provions returns. It has been re- mon-urist in March 1885 by the Survovor General's Department and found to be 203,844 foot, thereford giving a rubin spneu of 347 foot to onel prisoner during the hours of sleep, passages and corridors not included.
