ay-school, unsupported by private or other teans, except the fees of $2 per mensem paid cach scholar: He had an average attendance

ISU scholars, each finding his own school ma-

the occasion of periodical inspections, and on hat I learned from the masters by conversation id by a special conference I held with them to st the correctness of my views. I must premise at, as a locum tenens, I did not feel justified to amine the whole school myself at the end of the ar, because I was informed that the practice had en all along for the Head Master and the masters :committee to conduct the annual examinations ̇the school themselves.

The Central School may be divided into two partments, one for English and one for Chinese aching,

an equal amount of time being devoted

very day to both languages.

To begin with the English department of the eatral School; there was in 1878, with an aver- gemonthly enrolment of 459 scholars, an effective aff of 4 European masters, 6 native assistant isslers and 3 paid monitors. Apart from the mitors, therefore, and including among the tery both Europeans and Chinese, we had out 48 scholars to each master. Considering, wever, that none of the assistant masters can

said to pronounce English perfectly and to cak it idiomatically, it is well to note that there m in reality about 115 scholars to cach European
