CAUSE OF INCREASE OR DECREASE.

His Excellency the Governor ordered several Chinese Traders to be prosecuted for evading the Stamp Ordinance, and established a Chinese Agency for the sale of Stamps, hence the increase in 1877. Increase in Tenements, and less refunded in 1877 for Void Houses.

By several Land Sales.

Less Unlicensed Lands held by Chinese.

Licence for 1876 paid in December, 1875.

More Land sold in 1877.

Less Stalls occupied, and Alteration in the Markets.

This decrease is due to the fact that the Opium Monopoly was sold from the end of March, 1876, for three years at a falling off in value of $500 a month. The Revenue of 1877 was therefore More Licences granted,

[$1,500 less than that of 1876.
