Appendix I.
Report on the Small Por Hospital at Stone Cutters Island.
This Hospital was established on the 25th January, 1871, an epidemie of Small Pax having broken out in the Colony in December, 1870, and during the month of January, 1871, attułnod such a height that the temporary mal-sheds erected in proximity to the Civil Hospital, were found insufi. elent or inconvenient, for the treatment of the numerous cases, both Civil and Milliary, that were of dally occurrence.
The Convlet Gnol at Stone Cutter's Island having been fitted with beds and Hospital appliances fir 50 patients, was found very well adapted for the purpose of an Hospital for Infectious disenses, being situate on a small Island in the harbour of Hongkong, about 14 miles from the town of Victoria. The buliding faces East arul West and in consequence of its situation enjoys the full benefit of the monsoon wisuls; of course, It is perfectly isolated, there not being another habitation on the Island; this has been an Iminense advantage to the convalescent patients, as they could wander about on the sea. shore, and small hills in the vicinity, enjoying the pure air, dally sen breeze, and even sen bathing,
For the conveyance of patients to the Hospital, a good sized bont, mánned by (fl) six European Sailors (prisoners,) was test by the Gnel Autho rities, which pawed over dully to the Wharf nearest to the Civil Hospital, where the patients suffering from Small Pox were, in the first instance, received, and thence transmitted na early as possiblo to the Island Hospital, the patients protected, as required, by blankets provided by the Ckli Hospital. This plan was very successful, not a case, I can confidently nsert, having suffered throughout the epidemic from the voyage arross the harbour. The portion of the Ginol used as the Hospital, were the right wing, the chapel in the centre, and two wordens' rooins over the gateway for 6. malo patients and children,

The wing in 3 storled building, slout 100 feet long by 45 feet in width, divided down the centre from root to groquel door, mu open gallery running cutirely round the insifo on each floor, and from which the doors of the wards opened, these of course were built us cells for prisoners, but being Jarge double cells made very fair wards for 3 beds ench, giving a euble spurs of 880 fört muul in superficial uren of 73 feet 1 inch per bed,
Of these wards, there were on the 1st floor or corridor 8, 4 on either side of the centre gallery.
A larger word at the Eastern end of the gollery, was large enough to contain 5 beds, giving a cuble space of 1,231 feet and a supevilelal area od 102 feet por hèil,
Two small separate cella on this floor sunde nimirable sleeping room for word orderlies,
Four wards on the upper corridor of the same size as thọ 8 cells on the 1st floor. One warden's room at the Northernjend of ench gallery was used nan separate ward, 1 bed in ench, for better clow patients,
The chapel of the Gnol made a most excellent ward for 13 beds, affording a cubic space of 2,751.5 feet nud a superßelai aren of 100,3 feet fo eneli heil,
The ventilation of all the wards was oxcellent and thornigli, In enchi pell word toere were two openings on the level of the floor, 1 foot 0 inches by 10 inches, in addition to the door, and 3 windows 2 feet () Inclaw by 1 font & Inches, M. fleet from the floor, shaft ventilators running along the cellings, with openings through the external walls,
No warning was required for these wards. In the separate warden's rooms, fire was unde, as required, to krep the temperature at a proper aut comfortable degree to the patient.
The chipel during the very cold wenther in February was found ton eddil, heling sa forge a room and contalulng so many doors and windows, and having no fire pinew; but as the weather beenne warmer in Murch, nothing ruil be dextret better as a ward, than this portion of the Hospital.
The arrangements for opening the Hospital Having been completed on the 25th January, the day of my arrival to take. Medieul elurge, pation. were admitted on the 20th Janitary and contlined to arrive as follows:
