The building itself being nearly new is in an excellent state of repair and during the next year will require no alterations or repairs but what can be carried out at a trifling expense and with prison labour.
Being situated in the centre of the City of Victoria, and at an elevation of 176 feet above the level of the sea, the site is considered the most healthy and convenient situation that could possibly be obtained. It is fronting and overlooking the harbor, 354 feet long running East and West and 100 feet in breadth running North and South and about 20 feet in height.
The cells are well ventilated, and prisoners can have immediate assistance in the event of sickness or other causes both by day and by night, each cell being fitted with a bell pull as in the Government Prisons in England.
The drainage is good and there is a copious supply of excellent water. Baths, Water Closets and wash houses in every yard and water taps in the Corridors.
The work and Exercise yards are well protected from the Sun in Summer and the damp in Winter.
No. 2. During the year Her Majesty's Prison has been visited by His Excellency the Governor, the Colonial Secretary, the Acting Chief Justice, the Attorney General and the Bishop of the Diocese.
The remarks of the Visiting Justices and Magistrates largely bear favorable testimony to the efficient management and discipline of the Prison, at the same time their suggestions have been considered, and when practicable carried out.
No. 3. During the year a new house has been built for and occupied by the Superintendent. It is situated at the entrance of the prison, and is far more commodious and convenient than the house formerly occupied by the Superintendent which is being converted into a Debtors' Gaol.
Suitable quarters have also been built during the year for the Subordinate officers of the Establishment which is found to be a great improvement. The Turnkeys formerly living in the Corridors and next to the cells of the prisoners, the rooms in question are now converted into cells, giving increased accommodation for 21 European prisoners.
