"No squatting" in the sense in which it is understood in most other colonies, is adopted here, as the Land is unavailable for padurage, except in very few places for agriculture. Parties having possession of Lands or houses previous to the Treaty were allowed to retain them on payment of certain assessed Rentals, now collected by the Registrar General, and in cases where such lands or houses are not leased are considered tenants at will.
At the village of Shekwan, arrangements have been made for a regular sale of Lots for building purposes, and if successful a similar plan will be adopted in Aberdeen or any other Village likely to extend, or which may be productive and afford facilities for Trade or otherwise.
