(3) Mr. Groom's leave was granted for two months, and he left for the North on 26 September 1858 in the British Ship Alert. The Alert was wrecked on the Coast of Formosa, and Mr. Groom was detained in captivity until the 10 December, when he was sent to the port of Amoy on the mainland of China, and thence reached Hong Kong on the 20th of the same month. He has since accepted an appointment under the Chinese Customs at Shanghai and will leave the Colonial Service about the end of next month.
