Note

On comparing this Return with that for 1856, it will be observed that the number of Criminal Cases has increased from 790 to 2651. The Causes before the Court of Petty Sessions has fallen off from 1955 to 785, while the Criminal Cases in the Chief Magistrate's Office have increased. It is to be noted that the Chief Magistrate's returns include all cases heard before him on the days of petty sessions, and adjourned cases. Many Bordered cases were regularly summited for trial at Calcutta, and placed all others under the head of Cases disposed of within Chief Magistrate's Court. It will also be observed that the whole number of Criminal Cases in 1856 was 3951, and in 1857 was 3441, showing a falling off in the latter year of 510. The number of Criminal Defendants in the two years were respectively 4584 and 7301, showing, for the same period, an increase of 2717 defendants. This anomaly is owing to the fact that the prosecutors very much added to the number of persons charged with vagrancy, while the new law as to night refuse added 2477 to the number of Defendants.

...the anomaly would have disappeared, but for the fact that they were...
